International Chemistry Olympiad in Kiel a Great Success

The practical paper held on Wednesday, 21 July and the theoretical paper held on Friday, 23 July formed the corner-stones of the Olympiad. Although, of course - unlike the competitions in the Olympic Games - these papers had to be tackled behind closed doors, the media response was tremendous: On Wednesday, six television crews were waiting for the competitors after the practical papers to capture the immediate reactions and impressions for reports to be televised on that same evening in the Schleswig-Holstein-Magazin and elsewhere and on the following day in the Mittagsmagazin on one of Germany’s national public tv-channels.

The closing ceremony was held in the Hamburg Congress Centre and included the presentation of the medals by the Federal Minister of Education, Edelgard Bulmahn, the President of the Society of German Chemists, Prof. Hopf and the Vice President of the German Chemical Industry Association, Prof. Felcht. This was just as big a highlight for the participants as the ensuing farewell party on the museum ship Cap San Diego in the Port of Hamburg.
